CIRCUIT TEST J – FUEL PUMP CIRCUIT (RELAY & INERTIA SWITCH) Diagnostic Aids When ignition switch is in the ON or START position, the PCM connects FUEL PUMP circuit (PCM terminal No. 22) to ground. The fuel pump relay is energized and electrical current flows to the fuel pump. If PCM does not receive ignition PIP signal within 2 seconds, FUEL PUMP circuit is opened and fuel pump operation is terminated. Perform this test when instructed by QUICK TEST or CIRCUIT TEST AA. There are several different types of fuel injection conversions available, however, this instruction will concentrate on the High Output, MASS-AIR setups found on the 92-93 Ford Mustangs. There are two main advantages to using this type of setup. The first advantage is that the computer in the MASS-AIR system will automatically compensate for any engine modifications that have been done prior to the installation of the fuel injection system. The second advantage is that fuel is sent to each cylinder individually only during the appropriate firing cycle, meaning that fuel is sent sequentially to each cylinder only when the spark plug is ready to fire. Time Engine pump timing begins with the timing of the fuel injection pump drive gear to the camshaft gear. The first step is the location of TDC of the compression stroke for cylinder Number 1. Then, depending on the engine configuration, an alpha character on the injection pump drive gear will possibly need to be aligned with the mark on the camshaft gear. To verify that the fuel injection pump is timed correctly, first check the alignment marks on the pump flange and gear housing. NOTE: 1 mm of rotation past the timing mark will advance or retard (depending on direction of rotation) the pump timing by 1 degree.
