REMOVAL: 1) Disconnect the negative battery cable(s). 2) Place the transmission into the Neutral (N) position. 3) Raise the vehicle on a hoist. 4) Mark the drive shaft and pinion yokes for assembly alignment. On 4WD models, remove the skid plate. 5) Remove the transmission oil filter tube nut and filler tube. 6) Position a drain pan & disconnect the transmission fluid cooler tubes at the cooler bypass valve. 7) Remove the drive shaft. On 4WD models, remove the front drive shaft & transfer case assembly. Download REMOVAL Step 1 Before you begin – let vehicle cool for about an hour. Disconnect battery. Raise vehicle and support on jack stands. The higher you raise it, the easier it is to work under. If your installing a new transmission and converter, skip to STEP 3 Step 2 Drain oil from transmission by removing the drain plug. This is a good time to install a TCI® Drain Plug Kit, TCI® #805800. Pans without plug must be slowly removed by freeing one end and allowing bolts on other end to hold pan. The pan will drop down to allow the fluid to run out the end. Use a drain pan to catch fluid. Remove remainder of bolts and slowly lower pan and pour remainder of fluid in drain pan. Replace filter and clean pan and install new pan gasket. (New gaskets and filters available from TCI®). Download Remove 1. Move the selector lever to position “N”. 2. Raise the vehicle. 3. Unhook the loops for the rear exhaust pipe. 4. Detach the front heat shield and slide it backwards. 5. Detach the bracket for the front exhaust pipe from the transmission crossmember and swivel it downwards. NOTE: Support the automatic transmission with a transmission jack. 6. Detach the transmission crossmember. 1Detach it from the body. 2Detach it from the automatic transmission. Lower the automatic transmission and remove the transmission jack. 7. Detach the selector lever. 1Unclip the link rod from the selector lever. 2Selector lever 3Nut 4Selector shaft. 8. Disconnect the plug of the TR switch and remove the TR switch. REMOVAL & INSTALLATION TRANSMISSION Removal 1) Remove the shift knob and lock nut from transmission and transfer case shift levers (if equipped). On Wrangler models, remove screws attaching transmission and transfer case shift lever boots and remove both boots. 2) On all other models, raise outer gearshift lever boot and remove upper part on center console. Remove lower part of console, remove inner boot and gearshift lever. 3) On Wrangler models, remove transmission shift tower dust cover. Remove transmission shift lever and stub shaft. DO NOT remove shift lever from stub shaft. 4) On all models, raise and support vehicle. Drain transmission lubricant. Mark rear drive shaft for reassembly and remove rear drive shaft. Support transmission assembly and remove crossmember. Disconnect speedometer cable and wiring from back-up light switch. 5) On 4WD models, drain transfer case lubricant.
