Download Old Distributor Removal: Note: Ensure the vehicle ignition switch is in the off position and battery is disconnected before attempting the installation of the Vertex ® Electronic Distributor. Step 1 -Disconnect the coil trigger wire coming from the distributor to the negative (-) side of the ignition coil at the coil terminal. Disconnect the wire supplying current to the positive side (+) of the ignition coil. (Note: there may be two wires connected to this terminal, one from the ballast resistor and one from a terminal on the starter solenoid.) Identify this wire(s) for future reference as the coil+ wire(s). Remove the old ignition coil as this is no longer needed. Use a shop service manual and locate the spark plug wire that is used to set the timing (usually spark plug wire #1) and mark this wire location on both the distributor cap and the distributor housing. Download 1. Raise vehicle on hoist and remove right front wheel. Remove right inner splash panel. Remove accessory drive belts. Remove crankshaft vibration damper. 2. Remove generator drive belt idler pulley. Remove lower timing belt cover. 3. Remove right engine support assembly vertical bolts from bottom of frame rail (timing belt end of engine). 4. Lower vehicle. Remove upper timing belt cover. Place floor jack under vehicle to support weight of engine and transaxle assembly. Remove 3 bolts attaching engine mount assembly to engine bracket. 5. Move A/C drier aside. Remove coolant reservoir tank. Remove right engine mount. Remove 3 bolts attaching engine mount bracket to engine block. 6. Download CAUTION: MAKE SURE THE IGNITION SWITCH IS OFF!! The wire from the ignition switch to the ignition coil primary terminal is NOT fused in many applications. If this wire is allowed to touch vehicle or engine ground, with the ignition switch on, it can cause a direct short on the battery possibly causing permanent damage to the vehicle wiring and a fire. Cypress Engineering assumes no liability for damage caused from this occurrence or due to any faults in the existing vehicle wiring. 5. Remove the ignition switch wire from the ignition coil primary positive (+) terminal. Make sure this wire does not come into contact with vehicle or engine ground. 6. Belt removal Step 1 Disconnect the battery earth cable.* Make sure the engine is cold before you start working on it. Step 2 Turn the crankshaft (in the direction of normal rotation) to TDC by aligning the “O” timing mark on the crankshaft damper. The distributor rotor should be lined up with the index mark on the distributor body. Step 3 Remove any belts, pulleys or hoses interfering with the removal of the timing belt cover. Step 4 Remove the timing belt cover. Step 5 Loosen the belt tensioner adjustment bolt. Step 6 Pry the tensioner away from the belt and retighten the tensioner adjustment bolt. Step 7 Remove the timing belt. Step 8 Carefully inspect the drive. Poor drive alignment, improper belt tension and worn pulleys all contribute to early belt failure. In case of excessive wear, replace the drive component immediately.

INFORMATION SUBJECT: TIMING CONNECTOR LOCATION CHANGE MODELS: 1994 CHEVROLET AND GMC C/K TRUCKS WITH GASOLINE ENGINES The timing connector, which can be disconnected to return engine timing to base for adjustment purposes, has been moved from the engine compartment to inside the cab. This new location is not currently reflected in the Service or Owner’s Manual. The new location is under the dash directly below the glove compartment. The tan/black wire is routed for a short distance outside of a large wiring harness. This large harness is routed between the heater blower motor and evaporator case.
