Rotate engine clockwise and position cylinder No. 1 on TDC of compression stroke. Ensure “O” mark on crankshaft pulley aligns with “O” mark on outer timing belt cover. 2. Looking through plug hole of outer timing belt cover, ensure camshaft sprocket timing mark aligns with cover pointer. See Fig. 1 . 3. Remove fan guard, cooling shroud, cooling fan and fan shroud. Remove drive belt, water pump pulley and automatic belt tensioner. Discharge A/C system (if equipped) using approved refrigerant recovery equipment. Download 2001 Ford Escort ZX2 L4-2.0L DOHC VIN 3 Vehicle Level Engine, Cooling and Exhaust Engine Timing Belt Service and Repair. Removal 1. Grasp the spark plug boot firmly and with a twisting pulling motion, disconnect the spark plug wires from the spark plugs. 2. Download 1. Raise vehicle on hoist and remove right front wheel. Remove right inner splash panel. Remove accessory drive belts. Remove crankshaft vibration damper. 2. Remove generator drive belt idler pulley. Remove lower timing belt cover. 3. Remove right engine support assembly vertical bolts from bottom of frame rail (timing belt end of engine). 4. Lower vehicle. Remove upper timing belt cover. Place floor jack under vehicle to support weight of engine and transaxle assembly. Remove 3 bolts attaching engine mount assembly to engine bracket. 5. Move A/C drier aside. Remove coolant reservoir tank. Remove right engine mount. Remove 3 bolts attaching engine mount bracket to engine block. 6. Download 1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect intake air temperature sensor connector from intake air duct. Disconnect the air intake tube from the throttle body. Disconnect the breather tube from the valve cover. Remove resonator from throttle body. Remove air filter housing. 2. Raise and support the vehicle. Remove right front wheel. Remove right front splash shield from wheelwell. Remove serpentine accessory drive belt. 3. Remove crankshaft pulley bolts. It is NOT necessary to remove crankshaft sprocket center bolt. Download Removal 1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove air cleaner assembly. Remove upper fan shroud. Remove cooling fan assembly. Remove all accessory drive belts. 2. Remove fan pulley assembly. Remove crankshaft pulley bolt. Using Puller (J-8614-01) or equivalent, remove crankshaft pulley. Remove oil cooler hose from timing cover. Remove timing belt cover.
