Download TOOLS & PARTS I USED – Mag-Hytec Ford 10.5 rear differential cover – Redline #57914 75W140 gear oil, 6 quarts – 1/2″ socket & ratchet (cover bolt removal) – Flat screwdriver – Torque wrench – Drain pan – Several rags – Plastic putty paddle – Small funnel – Lacquer thinner – 1/4″ allen wrench (new cover bolt install) PROCEDURE Here’s a few pics of the Mag Hytec cover. Its a very impressive cover, complete with additional oil capacity, a magnetic dipstick, a drain plug, a 1/8 NPT port (for a temperature sending unit), and an o-ring to seal to the rear diff case. CORRECTIVE ACTION Replace the torque converter, or the torque converter and the transmission, and update the PCM with the HDS. NOTE: You must update the PCM to complete the repair. PARTS INFORMATION Torque Converter: P/N 26000-RDJ-315. DIAGNOSIS 1. To confirm the client’s complaint, test-drive the vehicle on a smooth road, preferably with a slight incline. Set the cruise control between 35 and 40 mph, and monitor the engine rpm using the vehicle’s tachometer, or use the HDS to take a snapshot of the engine rpm. 2. Download 1. Remove rear seat cushion and backrest. 2. Raise and support vehicle. 3. Remove rear wheels . 4. Disconnect brake hose from brake caliper. 5. Remove lower and upper strut mount retaining bolts, then the strut assembly. 6. Mount strut assembly in a suitable spring compressor. Ensure projections on compressor are seated on inner diameter of spring. 7. Compress spring until tension is relieved from spring seats. 8. Remove strut rod self-locking nut using a suitable socket wrench and spanner wrench tool No. 926510000 or equivalent. 9. Remove upper strut mount . 10. Slowly release spring tension, then remove coil spring , dust cover and helper from strut body. 11. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following: a. Download The following describes the procedure I used to remove and replace the right and left side rear differential seals on my 1994 Audi S4. This procedure should apply to the 1992 – 1994 S4 and the 1995-1997 S6 (the left seal process may be different on the ’96-’97 cars) and should be used in conjunction with the Bentley Repair Manual. Right Side Seal 1. Jack up the right rear of the car and support solidly on jackstands. The higher you jack the car, the better the access and the less likely oil will be lost when you remove the seal. 2. Remove the plastic gravel tray (four 13 mm bolts/nuts). 3. It is not necessary to drain the differential oil. When the axle flange and seal are removed, a small amount of oil may drain out. This can be caught in a drain pan. If you do decide to drain the differential oil, remove the fill plug BEFORE removing the drain plugs.… Read More
